Fireplace Log Rack
Increase beauty and function with a log basket.
While fireplace log racks are great accessories, something more is required when moving wood. Log baskets offer
carrying, style and other features that make them wonderful to use in conjunction with, or as replacements of, log
racks.
Why have a log basket? Anyone who has ever transported wood into a home knows how messy the
process can be. Even wood that has been properly stored will often shed bark, dirt, dead leaves and other unwanted
materials on the living room floor. Log baskets are great at keeping this debris off the floor and in the basket so
it can easily be disposed of.
Then there is the act of carrying the wood inside. Those who have carried logs know that they are often hard to
pick up, awkward to carry, can leave splinters, get one dirty and are difficult to set down easily once they have
been brought into the house. A log basket allows people to carry more logs and in a manner that is easier on the
nerves as well as the back. Once inside, the wood can be left in the basket or transferred to a log rack. Thus,
they are sometimes called log carriers.
There is also the aesthetic value of a log basket. On top of keeping the wood from looking messy, the right
basket can compliment any room. They can also be used to store other things such as newspapers when the basket is
not doing log duty. In short, they are a decorative as well as a functional furnishing.
Some types of log baskets. As things have progressed over the years, so have log baskets.
They now can be found in different materials and forms.
Wicker log baskets are one type that is increasingly popular. Made of environmentally-friendly rattan, they are
very light and go well with wicker furniture. They also have natural charm and are very durable.
Leather and canvas log carriers are also found in many homes. Very durable, lightweight as well as easy to fold
up and store away when not in use, they are quite handy. Furthermore, they can be combined with a frame for those
who want them to function just like a basket or log rack. They enable one to easy carry the wood in and set it down
on a stand and thus eliminate the step of transferring it to a log rack.
For maximum durability, there are log baskets made of metal. Constructed of metals to include steel and solidly
built, they look great and also make excellent log holders when set next to the fireplace. Other materials include
brass or iron, and coatings include graphite as well as copper.
These baskets also come in different shapes and sizes. For example, the cradle basket has a U-shape that makes
it very easy to access and control the logs. They offer both great functionality as well as a very modern look.
The opened ended basket also has a unique design. Rectangular shaped and often lacking handles, they are open on
both ends offering easy access to the logs when chucking them into the fireplace.
Things to consider With the different needs people have, it is impossible to say which type
of log basket is best. Fortunately, the wide range of baskets available means there is something for everyone.
Carefully consider the size, durability and style of the log basket. With so many to choose from, the perfect
basket at the right price can be found.
